Activator Methods

The Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AMCT), based on 35 years of empirical study and 15 years of clinical research, is a diagnostic and treatment system centered on the idea that a leg-length analysis can determine when and when not to adjust the spine. AMCT advocates claim its procedures “generally enable the clinician to confidently and consistently identify subluxations.”

AMCT focuses on the concept of “pelvic deficiency (PD)” or “functional short leg.” This is defined as an “apparent” difference in length, not an anatomical difference. If any imbalance is found [through several tests in which the practitioner holds the patient’s feet in various prescribed ways] the practitioner uses a spring-loaded mallet to tap various points along the spine, pelvis, and/or elsewhere until the imbalance is corrected. This approach is not a method of spinal manipulation. Slight variations of hip position or normal spinal muscle tension are probably responsible for the "imbalances." Today, AMCT has become the most widely used “low force” technique in chiropractics.
